Member Spotlight: Beach Bird Botanicals

Perusing the Beach Bird Botanicals line, you can almost hear ocean waves lapping at your feet. The soaps have a seaside palette and a seriously soothing vibe. Best of all, the company aims to make sure your skin feels as good as the soap looks. Born out of a frustration with existing commercial products, owner Robin Greene’s imagination took flight after learning about saponification, the chemical reaction that results in soap.

In business four years now, Robin explains, “The line has grown from cold processed soaps alone to over fifty individual products driven primarily by customer requests and anticipation of customer expectations. Above all, we take pride in the highest possible quality in each item we offer for sale. Our challenge always is to be the best among a field of competitive products.”

Member Spotlight: Naturals by Claudia

Naturals by Claudia started with a simple bar of soap made by soapmaker Claudia Aurandt 16 years ago, after learning that what was in her commercial products could be related to her diagnosis of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Disorder Syndrome. “I loved it! I was hooked after my first batch of soap! And I have loved it ever since! Now I have learned also how to make Salt Scrubs, Sugar Scrubs, beautiful Shea Butter Body creams, Botanical Oils. I am still hooked! There is nothing that compares to Natural Handmade Soaps and other natural products!”

After nearly two decades of soapmaking experience, Naturals by Claudia opened to the public this year, providing a well-rounded selection of soaps, body scrubs, massage and body oils, bath salt, and decadent body butters loaded with butters and oils. Keep in touch and find the latest and greatest products on the Naturals by Claudia Facebook page.

If you’re new to Naturals by Claudia, you must try the Whipped Body Butters or Awesome Skin Rescue Oil. Consider the Patchouli Cinnamon Bars, which Claudia generously sent in for use in the handcrafted soap video released this year for PBS’s In Focus program. You might even see some of the Naturals by Claudia bars on display when perusing the soapmaker shelves at HSCG headquarters.

Claudia says, “I am happy that I can contribute somewhat, even a little, to a better, healthier life for families. And it makes me feel good to know that when people use my products, they are doing something good for themselves, and especially their precious children.”

Thanks, Claudia, for sharing your products and your story with us!

Spotlight: Simply Body Soap Net

Ian Buffam is on a mission to stop soap mush (‘mush’ being a highly technical term for the substance caused by built-up moisture underneath a bar of soap while it’s floating in a non-draining soap dish or, horror of horrors, in the built-in water-collecting soap dishes thoughtlessly built into showers worldwide).

Ian owns Simply Body, a company he started in 2010 to provide his family’s soap nets to the world. His grandfather was the original mush-fighter. Tired of always finding an unintentionally semi-solid bar of soap within reach, Ian’s grandfather pioneered the idea of corralling soap within a net. Made of a hydrophobic non-absorbent polymer (try saying that three times fast), the net not only keeps bar soaps high and dry, they also provide gentle exfoliation (take that, rough heels!).  The soap nets last from six months to a year and (bonus!) are recyclable.

Today, Simply Body’s soap nets are handmade in Florida. They are, of course, the perfect accessory to handcrafted soaps (though who are we to judge if you’re dying to put a cream soap or a solid scrub inside?) and an excellent way to package end and sample-sized pieces of soap.

A member of the Handcrafted Soap and Cosmetic Guild since its inception, you may have caught Simply Body sharing their soap net fervor with attendees at past HSCG conferences. If you haven’t had the chance to meet Ian and his crew at a conference, you can always find Simply Body online, say hi on twitter, and see where the soap net will pop up next out on the Facebook feed. Members, log in to check out the discounts Simply Body offers.

Keep the mush at bay while boosting lather and exfoliation, supporting handmade accessories, and get it all at a discount? We can get behind that!

Thanks, Ian, for giving us a sneak peek into Simply Body Soap Nets!
