*MASTER SOAPMAKER CERTIFICATION* and More!

Executive DirectorHSCG Annual Conference, Membership & Benefits6 Comments

The HSMG Certification Committee, Chaired by Elaine Koronich, and the HSMG Board have established the last in a three part Soapmaker Certification Program, namely Master Soapmaker Certification. To become a Master Soapmaker, the candidate member must pass a rigorous four-part exam.

This exam evaluates the knowledge and experience of the soapmaker, along with their ability to research and investigate new areas; as well as, expand the awareness of the handcrafted soapmaking community.  Master Certification is offered separately for these handcrafted soapmaking processes: CP/HP and MP.

To be admitted to the Master Certification Program, a soapmaker must first have achieved the level of Advanced Soapmaker in that same soapmaking process.  This exam will be administered by a Master Certification Judges Panel.   Each part is scored according to a point system, and all parts must be passed in order to become certified as a Master Soapmaker.   It is anticipated that candidates could take 1 to 2 years to complete this certification.  Elaine will also announce the Master Certification Program in its detail at the HSMG Conference.

For information on the Soapmaker and Advanced Certification Programs, please join Elaine online at our Member Forum, this Sunday, April 11th, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. EST under the HSMG Projects and Activities, Certification Program area.  Elaine has schedule this special time for you all to answer your questions about the Certification Program.

The upcoming Denver HSMG Conference test times to take Soapmaker and Advanced Soapmaker Certification Testing at the are:

Thursday, April 29th from 6:00 to 7:00 pm

Saturday, May 1st from 7:00 to 8:00 am

Please arrive 15 minutes ahead of these times so everyone can sign in and be prepared to start on time.   After the exam starts, the doors are closed and entrance is not allowed into the room, so please do arrive early!

If you are planning to take an exam or exams at the Conference, please pay in advance by using the shopping cart in the HSMG member site, and select the Certification link.

Also, a Certification Registration form needs to be completed, and emailed or submitted at the Conference. The form is found here:  Certification Registration

This will really help in keeping the paperwork to a minimum at the Conference.

At the opening registration on Thursday April 29th, there will be a Certification table close to the Conference Registration where you can drop off your registration, and soap samples if you are taking the Advanced Soapmaker certification. After this opening registration, there will be a Certification table close to the Exhibitor’s Area and will be open during most of the break periods.

  1. Hello,

I am interested in the certification process. I would be starting with the first evaluation. Is it possible for me to do it now? Is experience the preparation for it or is there a textbook to read as well?

    Thank you so much. http://www.lumesoap.com

    1. Hi, Shannon, You can absolutely start the certification process now. Experience is a great prep – check out http://www.soapguild.org/members/certification/basic-overview.php. This link will ask you to log in, and once you do, it will take you right to the basic info – you’ll see a link to the practice exam at the bottom of this page as well as some reference material and terms to know. While you’re in that section, you’ll see a menu on the left hand side for proctored exams. That’s what you will be doing if you take certification exams now. That was a lot of info – holler if any questions!

  2. I am interested in the soap certification. I am not a member yet but i have been maki g soap for about 2 years. What do i need to do to start this process? What level membership is necessary?

    1. hi, Maria, All levels of membership are eligible to start soapmaker certification. Peruse the benefits section of the website – lots of reading there to catch you up on what benefits are tied to each level: http://www.soapguild.org/membership/benefits-chart.php

You’d start from the basic certification – you can choose either MP or CP/HP (or both!) and decide if you want to take an exam at the annual HSCG conference or through a proctor. There’s loads more on the website when you join, but that’s the basics – OOh, and lest I forget, headquarters is running a special where they are covering the cost of your 1st certification test!!

Lots of folks start with an associate membership, which sounds like it might be a good fit for you if you haven’t made the leap into sales yet.

      Hope that helps!!

      Jen

    1. In order to be certified you must be a member of the HSCG, certifications begin at $50 for the basic level. You can become CP/HP Certified as well as MP Certified.
