Volunteer Spotlight: Chamomile Cottage

Donna Pixton-Hacker became interested in soapmaking for her infant son’s sensitive skin. Familiar with plant remedies and essential oils, she tried a recipe for soap featured by Sandy Maine of SunFeather Natural Soap Co. Finding the soap gentle enough for her son, she told everyone about this natural herbal soap. Once they tried this amazing soap they asked for more and a business was born. Donna made glycerin bars, lotions, bath teas, and bath salts for her business in California for about eight years when she met her husband-to-be. After moving across the U.S. to marry him, she put the business on hold.

Now Donna has almost completed her first year back in business in New Jersey under Chamomile Cottage Natural Bath, Spa, & Body Care

When she started, an internet search brought up The Handcrafted Soap Makers Guild. She was thrilled to have a resource to find suppliers, advice, and wonderful people. As a soapmaker, she’s learned that what works on one person may not work the same on another. Creating variations to accommodate customer’s special needs is her pleasure. Donna’s business goal for this year is to convert as many of her products to organic ingredients as possible.

Donna has a 12 yr. old son who loves to help make soap, and many pets including 7 dogs and 2 sugar gliders.  She also loves to read, cook and entertain as well as spending time outdoors hiking, camping, fishing and observing wild life.  While she works a full time job in corporate America, Donna hopes to have her own soap shop and organic herb farm in the country someday. She already teaches soapmaking as well as making corporate gift baskets for businesses in the Philadelphia/South Jersey area.
